Hotokegaura, Aomori

A hidden gem in Japan

Traveling through Japan has been an incredible experience for me. I’ve traveled from the stunning landscapes of Hokkaido to the tropical paradise of Okinawa. As someone who deeply appreciates nature, I’ve encountered countless breathtaking spots along the way. One of the highlights of my travels was Hotokegaura, one of the most spectacular places I’ve ever visited! Its beauty is unforgettable!

This sea-eroded coastal area features uniquely shaped cliffs and enormous rocks stretching over two kilometers along the steep coastline overlooking Hiradate Strait at the entrance to Mutsu Bay. The cliffs formed about four million years ago when volcanic ash erupted from an undersea volcano, became compressed, and was then chiseled by rain and waves. The cliffs are mainly composed of green tuff. Some of the cliffs are over 90 meters high, making them difficult to approach from land. For a long time, the area was known only to locals.

From the public parking site, you can walk to Hotokegaura on foot. Walking back to the parking may be a bit hard for people who do not like walking uphill. There is also a scenic parking spot to view Hotokegaura from a distance.

By Boat

Going to Hotokegaura by boat is much easier than by car and walk. Sightseeing boats are departing from Sai Port and Ushitaki Port. For more information visit: http://www.vill.sai.lg.jp/en/01_detail01.html

Accommodation

Fukuura area of Sai Village is closest to Hotokegaura. There are several inns in this area. Fukuura is a small fishing village, and not surprisingly, they serve good seafood. I had a lot of uni (sea urchins) for dinner.

Oma is about 40 km away from Hotokegaura. This northernmost town of Honsyu, the main island, is famous for highly prized tuna, and there are many places to stay in Oma, including camp ground. I recommend to eat fresh tuna if you visit Oma.
